Participants can
discuss the applicability of the principles of student engagement to archetypical educational situations
recognize different feedback orientations of students and reflect on how this affects the desired outcome of peer feedback
transfer the principles of student engagement to their own courses
reflect on the effects of the principles of student engagement on their own learning
Design principles for student activation online and onsite
Design principles for effective group activities
Feedback orientation of students
Reflection on and transfer of the principles into one’s own courses
During the self-paced asynchronous phase, participants will watch videos, answer MC/SC-questions and reflect on their current teaching practices. The synchronous online session begins with an ice-breaker activity, followed by a readiness assurance process that guarantees every participant is well-acquainted with the main principles. Following the warming up, participants will work in three consecutive sessions on their own projects on student engagement and give as well as receive feedback from other participants based on a peer feedback rubric. The workshop ends with a peer and group discussion on the effectiveness of the principles of student engagement.
All university teachers are welcome.
In this interactive blended learning workshop, you will be introduced to the main principles of student engagement, experience their effectiveness firsthand and will eventually transfer them to your own courses.
The foregoing self-study phase is essentially built on the stand-alone eLearning course “Make it Stick - How to Activate Students”, which you can complete at any time. Otherwise, you will be automatically registered and notified two weeks before the synchronous online phase, so that you have ample time to acquaint yourself with the most important design principles for student activation and already take the first steps of transferring them to your own teaching. In the synchronous online phase, you will experience the effectiveness of these principles firsthand and work on your own projects and receive iterative feedback from other participants to further optimize your own concept for student engagement.
In this collaborative workshop of the Università della Svizzera iItaliana and the University of Bern, teachers from both universities will participate. The course language is English and will be held in English online (Zoom). Participation, therefore, requires a microphone and webcam.
